In the previous article we saw the first two steps on how to separate clothes according to:
- the labels
- the colour,
Below you will read how to separate your clothes based on:
- the type of fabric
Step 3: Sorting clothes by fabric type
In addition to sorting clothes by color, you also need to know how to separate clothes by fabric type. This may seem like an extra step, but it can actually go a long way in keeping your clothes in good condition.
Before putting clothes in the washer, double check the labels – set aside clothes that are hand wash or need dry cleaning. From there, separate the clothes into:
- heavy duty fabrics (such as jeans),
- everyday fabrics
- delicate.
To further protect your clothes, remove all items from pockets, secure all fasteners (zippers, buttons, etc.), and turn knits or garments with decorative designs inside out. You can also wash delicate clothes in a laundry bag. Below are some examples of different fabric groups:
Sheets and bed linen
Quilts should be washed in a high-capacity washer, separately from bed sheets. For your bed sheets and other bedding, refer to the label for details, but typically, you should use the warmest water setting depending on the fabric the sheets are made of.
Towels
As with other clothing, it’s best to wash white or light-colored towels separately from brighter-colored towels to avoid any transfer or fading of color. In general, towels should be washed with hot water.
Delicate
Delicate fabrics, such as silk, should be washed according to the garment label, as they may need to be hand washed or dry cleaned. If you will be using the washing machine, avoid mixing fabrics such as cashmere with lace or knitwear as they may lose their shape. Protect delicate clothes, such as underwear, by placing them in a mesh bag before washing.
Dark jeans
Lightly soiled jeans are best washed on their own and inside out with a delicate cycle and it is advisable to use cold water. In case you need to wash with other clothes, put them in with clothes of a similar color.
Dark athleticwear
Because athleticwear is prone to odour-causing bacteria, to help reduce potential unpleasant odours even after washing, use a cold water cycle in the washing machine.
